Fine Art Photography as an Investment

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

3 reasons to invest in your fine art photography collection

By definition, an investment yields a return over time. We often think of investments in the traditional context such as financial or real estate.

It may surprise you, however, to learn that collecting fine art photography is also an investment with the potential for increased value and returns.

Of course, our first rule of thumb is to invest in a photograph because you love it. Outside of pursuing your passions and making your space your own, here are 3 reasons why fine art photography is a smart investment.

1. Photography is one of the more accessible mediums to collect.

Many collectible photographs start at just a few hundred dollars and go up to quite a few thousand. As a collector, you may set a budget and slowly procure photographs in that price range or focus your photograph investments around a certain genre or photographer.

2. Photography holds its value over time.

Photographs not only hold their value, but are likely to increase in value over time based on factors such as who the photographer is and the size of the edition.

These are simple principles of supply and demand - the more limited the edition size and the higher the demand for certain pieces, the faster your investment will increase in value.

3. Photography is unique and elevates any space.

Fine art photography makes for far more than wall art and may actually help increase the resale value of your space. For instance, it’s not unheard of for a buyer to ask for select pieces or a full collection artwork to be included in a property sale.

Especially when coupled with the prime-eye of an adept interior designer, your fine art collection can elevate the overall presentation and experience of your space.
